Purcell - Dido & Aeneas
Lully - La Bourgeois Gentilhomme (The Prodigious Snob)
Internationally
renowned vocal ensemble Armonico Consort makes a welcome return to the
Worcester Three Choirs Festival following sell-out performances of its
magical production of Purcell's The Fairy Queen in 2005.
In a uniquely creative programme, Armonico Consort pairs the emotion of Purcell's Dido and Aeneas with the hilarious comedy of La Bourgeois Gentilhomme.
Without doubt, Purcell's astonishingly powerful work Dido and Aeneas
is a most captivating short opera. From the emotional intensity of the
famous lament, to the witty comedy of the drunken sailor, Purcell
tackles a wide spectrum of human behaviour and emotions. Lully's
brilliant comedy-ballet, has some of the most rousing French Baroque
music ever written and is combined with Miles Malleson's adaptation 'The Prodigious Snob''.
This is a hilarious story of a man desperate to climb the social
ladder, whatever the cost. With the comedy and melodiousness, this
could indeed be called 'A Baroque Magic Flute'. If you love Mozart, you
will adore this.
