Denise Inge

Denise Inge is an Honorary Fellow in Early Modern Research at the University of Worcester and a leading authority on the seventeenth-century Hereford poet Thomas Traherne.

At the turn of the twenty-first century six lost works of Traherne's were discovered in London and in Washington, DC. Dr Inge, who announced the discovery of some of this work and who has been studying Traherne ever since, has been a major influence in bringing these new manuscripts to light. She has edited two collections of his poetry and prose and written the first major critical study on Traherne since the new discoveries. Her most recent publication, Happiness and Holiness, the only book in the world to include selections from all his known works in a single volume, has received critical acclaim in the TLS, The Tablet, and appeared in the Spectator's "Books of the Year 2008". She lives in Worcester with her husband the Bishop of Worcester, and their two young daughters.

Denise says: “The book looks at Traherne as a theologian as well as a poet and demonstrates his distinctive contribution to Anglican theology. It is a great way to get to know this local poet whose ideas, written in antique English, are amazingly relevant. He is absolutely full of life and passionately in search of happiness. It’s as if what he is saying was meant for today.”
