Handel Concerto grosso Op. 6 No 6 in G minor
Vivaldi Le Quattro Stagioni (The Four Seasons)

The violin concerti known as The Four Seasons are the first four of a set of twelve entitled Il cimento dell'armonia e dell'inventione (The contest between harmony and invention). Vivaldi wrote a sonnet to accompany each concerto, and these describe in verse the musical landscape he created, complete with the calling of birds, the barking of dogs, thunder and lightning. The Four Seasons could therefore be described as programmatic music and among the first tone poems. Undeniably one of the most popular works of the classical repertoire, The Four Seasons has now been recorded over 300 times. Rachel Podger and her fellow hand-picked musicians will no doubt show festival-goers why Vivaldi's music has such enduring appeal.
