The fujara originated in central Slovakia as a large sophisticated folk shepherd's fipple flute of unique design.
Overtone flutes have a long history in different cultures around the world. This concert gives us a flavour of their variety. Dusan Holik and Karol Kocik are the two leading exponents of the Fujara, the Slovakian overtone pipe. This instrument has an ethereal quality, somewhere between and alto flute and resonance of the didjeridoo. Atsufumi Ijiie is a postgraduate music student in Japan. His particular expertise is the performance of zen shakuhachi music on the tabor pipe. By contrast, folklorist and performer Alberto Jambrina Leal brings is the lively traditional muisic of the Western Iberian peninsula on the Flauta y Tamboril, the local pipe and tabor.
