1596 he had been appointed organist and master of the choristers at Worcester Cathedral. Civil War broke out in 1642, with a siege in 1646 causing untold damage to the city. With the choir disbanded and the cathedral closed, Tomkins turned his genius to the composition of some of his finest keyboard and consort music.

Sweelinck had a 44-year career as organist of the Oude Kerk in Amsterdam from 1577, at the tender age of 15. In the course of his career, he set music to the liturgies of Roman Catholicism, Calvinism and Lutheranism and was the most important composer of the musically rich "golden era" of the Netherlands, representing a pinnacle of achievement in keyboard contrapuntal complexity and refinement before J.S. Bach came on the scene.
