Dean strides out again for Three Choirs Festival

The Dean of Hereford, the Very Reverend Michael Tavinor, is to repeat the sponsored walk between Hereford, Gloucester and Worcester Cathedrals which he last undertook in 2012 in aid of the Three Choirs Festival and The Music Pool raising £2,500 in total. The same two charities will benefit from this year’s walk, which will take place from 6 – 11 April 2015 along the same 90-mile Three Cathedrals route as before.

Sponsors are invited to donate no more than £10 each to the Dean’s appeal – smaller amounts are equally welcome. Half of the funds raised will support the cost of the Orlando Consort’s Three Choirs Festival concert entitled Dust & Ashes: Requiem for 1000 Years.

‘The costs of the Three Choirs Festival continue to rise and we rely more and more on sponsorship,’ said Dean Michael. ‘Concerts are, of course, sponsored by groups and organisations but I do feel that there is room for individual donations large or small, supplementing the excellent work undertaken by the Friends of Hereford Three Choirs Festival.’

The other half of the total raised by the Dean’s walk will go towards supporting the work of The Music Pool, Herefordshire’s community music charity, which enables singers of all ages and abilities to join together in making music. ‘The Music Pool has had its funds cut in recent years, so an donation to them at this time will, I know, be especially welcome,’ said the Dean.’

‘The Three Choirs Festival embraced a charitable element from his inception, following the tradition established by the earlier Festival of the Sons of the Clergy, held at St Paul’s Cathedral, London. Preaching at the Gloucester Music Meeting in 1724, Thomas Bisse, a Canon of Hereford, emphasised the importance of a collection at the festival for those in need. The charitable element of the festival has never been lost and, to our knowledge, there has been a retiring collection either at the opening service or after the final concert ever since.’

A Sponsorship Form for the Dean's Walk can be downloaded here.

Donations to the appeal will be processed through the Three Choirs Festival Association Limited, which will attract gift aid of an additional £2.50 on every £10 given by those who have indicated that they pay enough UK tax to cover the total of all their gift aid donations to an charitable causes in the relevant year.

Cheques made payable to Three Choirs Festival should be sent to Three Choirs Festival, 7c College Green, Gloucester GL1 2LX. Alternatively they can be left in the Cathedral office or vestry at Hereford, in an envelope marked ‘Dean’s Sponsored Walk’. Please include contact details, preferably an email address, for an acknowledgement.

Donations can also be made over the phone by calling the Three Choirs Festival ticket office 0845 652 1823 Monday – Friday between 10 am and 4 pm.
