Three Choirs Festival's silent movie screening features local star

Many thanks to Alan Freke of the Frenchay Village Museum, who has just let us know of a fascinating local connection to the 1923 version of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, which we'll be screening in Gloucester Cathedral at 10.15 pm on Wednesday 27 July, with an improvised organ accompaniment by Jonathan Hope. The actor Nigel de Brulier, who plays Don Claudio (pictured above with Lon Chaney as Quasimodo), was born Francis Packer in Frenchay in 1877, and lived in the village until about 1900, when he went to the USA.  He took the stage name of Nigel de Brulier when he appeared in his first film in 1913.  His successful film career lasted until 1943.
