SONGS OF THE EARTH
Song of the Earth is a community music project involving over 250 singers who come from almost every conceivable type of singing group, both locally and from further afield.
Enthusiasm and a love of singing was the only qualification that was required in order to take part in this event. This has opened the door both to the highly experienced professional and the dedicated amateur – regardless of experience. Since May the singers have taken part, together with a group of instrumentalists, in a series of workshops preparing for what promises to be an exciting and profoundly moving experience in the Cathedral on the final Sunday of the festival. The performance will make use of the different spaces in the Cathedral, so that it is heard from above, behind and in front. Instruments such as bronze gongs and bells, tam-tams, tone harps, psalteries, bowed instruments and huge drums will accompany the singers.
Song of the Earth is a celebration of the sacred music that reflects our multi-faith society. It presents an extraordinary range of global sacred musics from songs that express a yearning for union with the divine, to choral music that will simply bring about an overwhelming sense of peace and serenity. Come and experience the magnificent acoustics of the Cathedral and listen to the richness of this stunning programme which will include Irish, Native American and Byzantine sacred chants; Georgian, Indian, Balinese and Hebrew sacred music; the Sanctus from the Missa Luba; Spirituals and Gospel harmonies and contemporary music by Tavener.
