CATHEDRAL CONCERT (EVENT 14) With the Festival Chorus and Philharmonia Kodály Budavari Te Deum, John McCabe Notturni ed Alba, Schubert Mass in A flat. Kodály’s rousing Budavari Te Deum was commissioned by the city of Budapest to celebrate the 250th anniversary of its liberation from the Turks in 1686. John McCabe’s exotic and seductive song-cycle Notturni ed Alba sets a variety of medieval texts which address various aspects of night, and was first performed at the 1970 Three Choirs Festival in Hereford. Schubert’s fine Mass in A flat dates from a time when his music was undergoing great stylistic development, and stands comparison with Beethoven’s contemporaneous Missa Solemnis. Adrian Lucas conductor (pictured right), Carys Lane soprano, Catherine King mezzo soprano, Andrew Kennedy tenor, Robert Rice baritone. |
