Singing groups
Mindsong piloted singing groups for people with dementia in 2009 as part of the Gloucestershire Partnerships for Older People Projects (POPP). Led by music therapists or volunteers, these groups worked in three centres in the county. Training in both facilitating and assisting with singing groups was provided by a specialist music therapist, with dementia training given by the Alzheimer's Society.
It was decided that a more sustainable service could be offered by using music therapists to train care home activity coordinators to run singing groups themselves. Training is now well under way (July 2010).
Interested in assisting with singing groups?
If you are interested in volunteering for mindsong and have an interest in singing and some time to spare, contact us. Email Anthea Holland or Jane Crampton for more information.
Another training course may be available for activity coordinators and other care home staff to increase confidence in introducing singing to their clients, subject to funding.
